Written by an internationally recognized leader in the field, this book gives a concise account of the theoretical aspects of classical fluid mechanics and its modern developments. It is primarily intended for 1st ? or 2nd-year graduate students in American universities, or college students, but portions can be taught to qualified undergraduates. It is of interest to those studying physics and meteorology as well as to engineers.

Chia-Shun Yih (1918 ? 1997), born in Kweiyang, China, was Stephen P. Timoshenko Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan. He is remembered by his students as a really inpiring teacher whose enthusiasm and excitement for his subject were contagious.
His published work includes well over 100 scientific papers and 2 books: Fluid Mechanics: a Concise Introduction to the Theory and Dynamics of Nonhomogeneous Fluids ? later revised as Stratified Flows
His numerous honors include the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior Scientist Award (Germany), the Theodore von Karman Medal (Amer. Soc. of Civil Engineers), the Henry Russel Lectureship (University of Michigan), the Stephan S. Attwood Award (Univ. of Michigan), the Fluid Dynamics Prize (Amer. Physical Soc.), and the Otto Laporte Award (APS).
