Canadian Law, Seventh Edition, combines the basic building blocks of Canada?s system
of public law with a relatively broad social analysis of that system, providing perspectives
on the role of law, sources of law, the significance of the Canadian Charter of
Rights and Freedoms, the value of statutory interpretation, criminal law, family law,
administrative law, and torts.
During the production of this text, the federal government introduced Bill C-75,
which proposed significant changes to Canada?s criminal justice system. The proposed
changes were driven in part by the Supreme Court?s ruling on R. v. Jordan, responding
to the issue of unreasonable delay in court cases, and the Colten Boushie case, which
called into question jury selection. If passed, Bill C-75 will result in a significant
overhaul of Canada?s criminal justice system, notably eliminating preliminary
inquiries, removing peremptory challenges in jury selection, and reclassifying some
indictable offences as less serious summary offences.
